Returning home after a month in Newfoundland, Joyous Vagaries took some time to spend in northern Maine and the New Hampshire White Mountains.
The first stop was in Fort Kent, ME, where an e-bike ride along the16.9-mile Saint John Valley Heritage Trail was a must-do. This multi-purpose trail is maintained quite well. Although there are many road crossings, there are a few spots along the St. John River that affords some very nice views. After the bike ride, the next must-do was a visit at First Mile Brewing Co. to sample a flight of craft beer and enjoy a slice (or two!) of pizza.
Moving on to Monson to stay for a couple of days, Joyous Vagaries decided to explore the 100-mile Wilderness, driving from Kokajo to Jo-Mary, and from the Katahdin Iron Works in Brownville Junction to Greenville. Toward the end of the drive, we spotted a cow moose and her calf.
While having some dinner at the Lakeshore House in Monson, we met a very nice man who recently hiked the AT, whose trail name is “Puzzles”. We stopped by 100 Mile Wilderness Adventures to visit with him before leaving Monson. If you are interested in hiking the 100-mile Wilderness, the folks here would be a very useful resource for shuttles and food drops.
Moving on to Northern New Hampshire for a stay at Dolly Copp in the White Mountains, the weather provided a perfect opportunity to take a drive up the Mount Washington Auto Road in the late afternoon. Both the drive up and down the mountain provided some breathtaking views.
These are some of the images captured during the trip around Northern New England:
