Continuing the Eastern Continental Journey, Joyous Vagaries explored the Kissimmee Prairie State Preserve, Bok Tower Gardens, Orlando Wetlands Park, Little Big Econ State Forest, and a Florida Trail section within Seminole State Forest. For this section of the ECJ, we made base camp in Titusville at brothers Harry and Terry.
The Florida Trail passes through Kissimmee Prairie State Preserve. Taking a hike out on one of the trails within the preserve, we spotted some alligators sunning on a stream bank, various birds that would not stay still for a photo op, and a few water birds. If you plan to camp here, note that this preserve is Dark Sky (a great bonus!).
Stepping away from the Florida Trail, we took a side trip to Bok Tower Gardens, a popular destination as we encountered many visitors along our walk through the park. The Carillon seems to be of particular interest to many who visit Bok Tower. Should one be visiting at the right time of day, one may be afforded a live performance of the Carillon from the tower.
After the side trip at Bok Tower Gardens, we worked our way back to the Florida Trail at Orlando Wetlands Park. This park would be considered a wildlife photographer’s ‘dream’, as it is teaming with wildlife. Many species of water birds can be found here, along with other bird species, and of course, alligators. As with any wetland, wildlife activity is at its height in the early morning and early evening.
The Florida Trail also passes through Little Big Econ State Forest. We hiked along the trail at the Econlockhatchee River (Econ River for short). There wasn’t a lot of wildlife activity as there were many people fishing along the river, and the trail was quite crowded.
The section of Florida Trail within Seminole State Forest that was near Bear Pond Loop was a bit lackluster as we didn’t find any wildlife there. However, other users may find the trail an interesting one to hike.
