After our 5-day journey on the Kamutik W Ferry, it was time to do the dreaded task of laundry again in Happy Valley – Goose Bay. The laundromat was devoid of people for the duration of our activity. Having completed our ‘chore’ after 11:00, we decided to head back over to the Friendship Diner for a repeat of a French Toast and Bacon breakfast – as usual, it was delicious! We met up with “Sweet Baby James” again, as we wanted to bid him a fond farewell. We finally met the cook, who makes the best French Toast in the whole world. We learned that she is from Nain, which was the last community we visited on the ferry. She was not only kind enough to teach us the Inuit word for “thank you”, which is Nakumek, she also gave us the phonetic spelling (Na – ku | mek). We truly wish to say to her and all generous peoples at the Friendship Center in Happy Valley – Goose Bay, a huge Nakumek!
Laundry done and breakfast eaten, it was time to continue on. The second half of the Trans-Labrador Highway along Expedition 51 has only two towns: Churchill Falls and Labrador City, where we managed to get enough sleep and food to carry us along our way. Not long after leaving labrador City, we crossed over into Québec, and continuing on Route 389. This route has two sections of road that are unpaved, both of which total close to 100 miles. We made a stop for gas in Relais-Gabriel, and to grab a bite to eat. The proprietor spoke just enough English for us to understand each other. He is a great cook, and made the best loaded cheeseburgers in all of Canada! We parked out back to stay for the night, giving us a great view of Lac Jozée-Savard and a Loon below, and a nice mountain range off in the distance.
The next day we headed for Manic 2 Campground, which will conclude Expedition 51 and this journey. We had hoped to continue across Canada and up to the Arctic this year. However, we have been watching very closely the devastating fire situations across Canada. Though we would love to go, we believe it would be better for us to stay out of the way while the courageous firefighters of Canada and Mexico work to get these horrific blazes under control. We wish them the best in their task, and will light a candle in honor of their service.
