This short 5.5-mile section of the NOBO LASH spans between NJ 94 and Warwick Turnpike. The day started with cloudy skies, temps in the low 40’s, and a steady breeze. Within an hour, clouds gave way to partly cloudy skies.
The section of trail has just one shelter: Wawayanda Shelter. As with all previous NJ Shelters, this one has a bear box and a moldering privy. The shelter is small, but in good shape. Interestingly, inside the bear box was an open/empty bag of pistachios, deodorant, and an empty box of Pall Malls – a strange combination indeed!
The highlight of the hike was the Pinwheels Vista from the top of Wawayanda Mountain. The steep and rocky climb up from NJ 94 is considered the “Stairway to Heaven”. What can be seen is the High Point Monument in High Point State Park. By trail that monument is 20 miles south on the AT.
Overall, this was a welcome short-day hike.
