Elk Pen

This 12.4-mile section of the NOBO LASH spans between NY17A the Elk Pen parking lot, which is just east of the NY State Thruway (I-87).  The hike started with partly sunny skies, but turned to all cloudy after a couple of hours with the threat of rain.

There were few views in this section, mostly due to tree growth.  One could see where there were likely great views 20 or 30 years ago off some of the rock ledges, but this is no longer the case.  The highlights of this section would be the view off Eastern Pinnacles, Cat Rocks (significant ledges!), Fitzgerald Falls, and a nice view to the south toward Hogback Mountain.

Overall, this hike involved some hand over hand climbing, and some steep descents, requiring one to be very careful with foot placement!  In a couple of locations, one might think that some Pennsylvania rocks emigrated to New York!
