This 21.8-mile section of the NOBO LASH spans between NY 52 and Hoyt Rd which is considered the NY/CT border, and was completed within 3 days. The first day had very nice weather: low 50’s, sunny, and a pleasant breeze. The second day was overcast with drizzle, and temps in the mid 40’s. The final day started overcast and very damp, but ended at mid-day with much sunshine and temps in the upper-60’s
The highlights of this trail section included Morgan Stewart Shelter, a view of Nuclear Lake, a view from a rocky outcrop, Telephone Pioneer Shelter, the Dover Oak in Pawling, NY, a boardwalk that meanders through the Swamp River Marsh for approximately .25 miles before reaching the Metro North Railroad Station at NY 22, a walk through pastures in the early morning, and Wiley Shelter.
‘Nuf Said met an ‘unofficial caretaker’ of Morgan Stewart Shelter, who has been doing a wonderful job maintaining the shelter, as well as the surrounding area. He has hiked several sections of the “AT” and has the trail name of “Ranger1”
At the Dover Oak, we met Deb Keesler and her daughter, Kate, who is a candidate for Eagle Scout. The work being performed on the trail was Kate’s project, which was to engineer and create a series of well-built steps into a slope of the trail that suffered significant erosion. Well done, Kate!!
We have now completed the NY section of the AT. Now it’s on to Connecticut!
