Bay of Fundy Day Trip

Today’s joyous vagary was a Bay of Fundy day trip to Deer Island and Campobello by way of two different ferries.  The ferry to Deer Island departs from L’Etete, NB, and is offered free of charge by Coastal Transport Ltd.  The ferry from Deer Island to Campobello is provided by East Coast Ferries, Ltd, but not offered free of charge.

Off Deer Island Point, one can see the Old Sow Whirpool, which would be considered the highlight of visiting Deer island.  The best view of the Old Sow occurs 3 hours before high tide.  Unfortunately, the timing of our visit was not within that 3-hour window.

Moving on to Campobello, we decided to have lunch at the Prince Café, which is located in Roosevelt Campobello International Park.  On such a beautiful day, it was most enjoyable to dine on the porch with a view of Friars Bay and Eastport, ME.  After lunch, we visited Campobello Gift House & Scoop Shack Drive Thru for a delicious scoop of ice cream.  We were greeted by a friendly 13 year old dog named “Jersey”.

After our ice cream treat, we drove over to the parking area for Head Harbour Lighthouse.  The station is only accessible at low tide, where one must take stairs down to the ocean floor, carefully walk across (it’s slippery when wet!), and up another set of stairs before reaching the lighthouse.  From a distance, the lighthouse looks quite nice, but up close, one can see it is very much in need of repair.  Of note, there is a $5.00 CA fee to see the lighthouse, although it did seem the fee collection process is not well controlled.

Overall, it was a nice day to take a trip from Eastport to ‘tour’ the Islands, and to experience what it’s like to drive onto a ferry.
