The next destination for Joyous Vagaries was St. Lunaire-Griquet, which is located near the northern tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. Continuing on from Rocky Harbour, we made a stop at Arches Provincial Park to see some gorgeous rock formations on the beach. After capturing some images, we saw that rain looked imminent, so we moved on up the coast to make a stop at Port au Choix National Historic Site. Our goal was to walk a couple of trails at this site before the rain started. Unfortunately, the sky opened up, so any hiking was now off the table. Instead, we went inside the visitor center and spoke with Park staff about this historic site.
We were directed to visit the French Rooms Cultural Center in Port au Choix, which has an outdoor French Bread Oven. This is a ‘must see’ in the area. Since we weren’t going to do any hiking in the rain, we decided to stop by. Not only could we see the bread oven in operation, but we were also able to purchase a sample of fresh bread, homemade jams, and cocoa. To top off this wonderful experience, we were honored to hear stories from “Davy Jones” (that’s what he goes by; see his FB page: David Alfred Jones, a local who is one of the committee members of the Cultural Center. He was impacted by and lived through the Cod Moratorium of 1992.
We had a 4-day stay in St. Lunaire-Griquet, at Southwest Pond Cabins. April was a most gracious and helpful host during our stay. The time spent in this area allowed us to visit L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, to experience an iceberg tour on a Zodiac boat from Dark Tickle Expeditions, sample some homemade ice cream at Dark Tickle’s Café Nymphe (can’t say enough about how great all of the staff were!).
Aside from this, we decided to take in a few drives to various villages that one may consider the ‘outer reaches’ of the Northern Peninsula. Many of these little villages provided some nice trails with lookouts over tucked away harbors. The Town of Englee was a particular favorite!
On the way back from Englee, we stopped at Lidstone’s Irving on Route 433 in Roddickton, NL for a bite to eat. The food is excellent, and all cooked by the proprietor, Michelle Lidstone. If you are ever in the area, and looking for some good food, do stop by. Michelle says she cooks everything, so you are bound to find something fresh cooked and good to eat!
On our last afternoon here, we went to Central United Church in St. Lunaire-Griquet which was having a craft and baked goods sale. We bought some homemade partridgeberry jam to take with us on our journey east toward Twillingate.
Below are some images and videos we captured along the way.
