Moving along in our NOBO LASH, this 5.9-mile section of trail spans between PA Route 233 in So. Mountain, PA to Caledonia State Park. Today’s hike was shortened by design, as time needed to be spent in the afternoon to try out the new Zpacks Duplex Tent that was received in the dead of winter. Sidebar Note: Setting up this ultra-lightweight tent is quick and easy!
Today’s hike started with temps in the upper 20’s, sunny, and a light breeze. Temps warmed into the upper 40’s by mid-day. No people were encountered today, which was a refreshing change from the weekend encounters. No wildlife was seen either, but Pine Warblers, Carolina Wrens, Chickadees, Bluejays, and an occasional Tufted Titmouse were heard throughout the morning hours.
There were no views on today’s hike, so the highlight of the day was visiting the Rocky Mountain Shelters. The name is quite appropriate, given the increase in rock scrambling one must do on this section of trail. It is said the real rock scramble doesn’t happen in PA until after crossing the Susquehanna River.
