The next segment of Joyous Vagaries’ Newfoundland Trip includes a two-night stopover in Bonavista, NL. On the way to Bonavista, we stopped at the Visitor Centre in Terra Nova National Park, but found it to be closed. As long as we were there, we took a short walk around before moving on. Our next stop in Terra Nova was to take a short hike to the top of Ochre Hill, where we found a decommissioned fire tower and a platform with a 360-degree view.
Continuing our trek to Bonavista, we stopped in Elliston as we wanted to see some very old root cellars and the Puffin Colony. The Puffins were keeping a safe distance on a rock island across from the viewing site. The jagged cliffs along the trail to the viewing site were most impressive.
Having arrived in Bonavista, we checked into our Airbnb (hosted by Coastal Connection), had some dinner, then drove out to see the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse. The lighthouse was opened as a Provincial Historic Site in 1978 – a very good year! 😉
The next day, we went to visit Dungeon Provincial Park (a UNESCO Geosite), followed by a visit to Spillars Cove. We didn’t get to see the Chimney, as there was no place to park at the trailhead, so we moved on.
The end of our last day in Bonavista was punctuated with a delicious cheeseburger and a strawberry milkshake at Little Dairy King. This little family owned business is operated by some very friendly and attentive staff. It was a joy to be there. Anyone visiting Bonavista should make a point of stopping by!
Below are some images and videos from our trip to and stay in Bonavista.
