Lonesome Lake Hut is one of 8 high huts located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. One can reach this hut via the Lonesome Lake Trail, which is considered moderate, and starts within Lafayette Campground in Franconia Notch State Park. The trail to the hut is 1.5 miles in length.
The hike up started with sunny skies, a light breeze, and temps in the low 60’s. After reaching the hut long before the “required” check-in time (3:00 PM), it was learned that the hut was going to be almost full to capacity with people staying overnight – 44 out of 48 expected. It was also learned that checking in early was allowed – not sure that would always be the case, but it never hurts to ask. This is considered a good hut for families with children.
For the most part, the skies were mostly to partly cloudy, with temps in the upper 70’s, a light breeze, and no shortage of people and black flies! By 5:00 PM, the skies were overcast, with rain expected the next day.
The food is plentiful and edible at this hut. Breakfast and dinner is served family style to those who have reserved a bunk for the night. At this particular hut, the dining area was very crowded and the noise level was similar to what one would hear in a cafeteria, making it difficult to hear those sitting right next to you.
A minor mishap was encountered on the way back down the trail from Lonesome Lake Hut, resulting in a bit of hiatus from our journey. We will resume the Canadian part of our trip as soon as possible!
