After leaving First Falls Park in St. Mary’s, we continued along the Irish Loop stopping at St. Vincent’s Beach, Cape Race, Portugal Cove South, and Renews before stopping for the night at La Manche Provincial Park. La Manche was only for a one-night stay. We were camped next to a pond that provided us with a nice sunset view, which made for a pleasant evening.
St. Vincent’s Beach is a popular spot for watching whales feeding close to the shore. However, it was foggy, and we saw no whales. We were told they are late this year. So, we took a few pictures around the beach and moved on.
Cape Race (and Lighthouse!) was the highlight of our day, even though we had been here before. It is always a lovely place to visit. To start with, a little history about Cape Race: It was the first place to receive the distress signal from the Titanic. Be mindful, however, when visiting, as there are dangerous cliff edges and drop offs. Word of advice: Never stand too close to the fog horn! Doing so could damage your hearing!!
After leaving Cape Race, we stopped by Portugal Cove South on the Irish Loop, where we had a lovely lunch while watching the raging surf. Continuing on, we stopped for a brief rest break in Renews, where there was a huge rock in the Harbour with thousands of seagulls roosting, and creating quite a musical ruckus, just for us! Moving on, we set up camp at La Manche Provincial Park and spent the time there relaxing for the evening.
Upon waking the next morning, we packed up and headed to the East Coast Trail in La Manche. Our goal for the morning was to hike 2.6km to the La Manche Suspension Bridge. On arrival we were greeted by the loveliest Harbour Seal that was resting on a rock. Be sure to see the video of the seal on our YouTube Channel. The views in the area did not disappoint!
Our next stop was Pippy Park Campground in St. John’s, where we camped for four days. Next up: St. John’s region.
