Tower Trail at MNWR

Today’s joyous vagary was an out-and-back 5.3-mile hike between the Headquarters and the end of the Tower Trail, which is located in the Baring Division of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge on Bald Mountain.

This was one of the few sunny days this summer (2023 has seen far more rain and fog days than sunny days in Downeast Maine), with a light breeze, and temps in the low 70’s.  Trail conditions were quite favorable. As for bugs, it was mostly mosquitoes and No see-ums – no black flies!

The trailhead is approximately 2 miles from the Headquarters parking lot by way of the Headquarters Trail leading out of Mullen Meadow.  The length of trail is .6 miles, ending at the top of Bald Mountain – a whopping 374 feet above sea level!

Reaching the end of Tower Trail, one is afforded what is left of the remains of the once 100-foot wooden fire tower that was presumably build around 1937.
