Continuation of the NOBO LASH, this 8.5-mile section of trail spans between Crampton Gap (Gathland State Park) and Turner’s Gap. The hike started at 7:32 AM, and ended around 2:30 PM. Temps were warmer today, starting in the mid-40’s, partly cloudy, and a light breeze. Later in the day, the temps moved into the low 60’s, and the wind picked up considerably.
As with the previous day, the highlight of today was another spectacular view to the south from a rocky outcrop. Aside from the vista, there were interesting “AT” carvings in the ends of logs that were cut from downed trees. Some of these downed trees were used as water bars to help prevent erosion on the trail.
Of particular note, there is a campground maintained by the State of Maryland that is intended for AT hikers, which is right next to the trail – Dahlgren Backpack Campground. This campground has 6 sites for tenting, fire rings, potable water, and bear poles). The campground also has showers available (during the summer season).
Very few people were seen today. There were two hikers in the early morning, both hiking north. Aside from that, only 4 other people were met along the way. And what was seen for wildlife today? Surprise, surprise, only one grey squirrel! An interesting wildflower was spotted today, called Lesser Celendine, which is not native to North America, and deemed poisonous if ingested raw.
