This 10-mile trail section of our NOBO LASH spans between Wolfesville Rd and Pen-Mar, MD, including the Mason-Dixon Line (the MD/PA state line). The hike started a bit later than on previous days, but ended in the early afternoon. It was another cold start to the morning (in the 20’s), with a bit of a stiff breeze that made the temps feel like they were in the teens, and sunny. By the end of the hike, the temps were in the low 40’s, still quite breezy, and cloudy.
There were two good views along the trail. The first was south of Raven Rock Shelter, and the second was High Rock Ledges, which is about 2 miles north of the shelter. High Rock Ledges is loaded with graffiti due to its accessibility, as well as (sadly) quite a bit of trash. It seems the security camera there does not serve as a deterrent. To enjoy the panoramic view of the valley below, one must look past the graffiti and trash.
Two shelters were visited on this hike. Raven Rock Shelter and Ensign Cowell Shelter. Both shelters were in good shape and left clean.
All in all, a good hiking day! Rain was in the forecast for tomorrow (Saturday), which will make for the right time to take a “zero” day (taking a day off from hiking).
This completes the last of the hikes in Maryland. On to Pennsylvania!
Be sure to visit the Maryland Gallery!
