We stopped in the Town of St. Mary’s as two big red chairs caught our eye on the way by. We were half expecting Edith Ann to appear. If you don’t know the reference, you will need to Google it!
The red chairs, a Canadian icon, are part of the Town of St. Mary’s First Falls Park & Trails. At this park, we encountered a well-designed waterfall and walking trail. We took the shorter loop, but the longer walk is even more beautiful. People visiting the area should make the time to stop by and experience this park.
The park was thoughtfully laid out and built very well. There is something for everyone. There is a playground and picnic area, and is great for dog walking. Returning to the parking lot, we met a lovely local named Howard. He is a member of the Town Council, and keeps a watchful eye on the park, by stopping by each day to check on things.
St. Mary’s is so well liked, that a few camper vans can park overnight in the parking area. There are no power hookups, but campers have access to fresh water if needed. There are clean, and well-appointed washrooms on site, along with a free library. The toilet paper holder even has a tray for cellphones! Thank you, Howard, for the meticulous work done on these washrooms!
Leaving the park, we stopped at Ryan’s Value Foods, located a short distance up the road. This is a great place to get gas, have a meal at their restaurant, or buy groceries. They have everything one could want here. We even ran into Howard on our way out of the store!
If you are doing the Irish Loop, St. Mary’s is one of the must-see towns to stop in. It is worth taking the extra time to visit such a beautiful place.
