This 17.7-mile section of the NOBO LASH, which was completed over the course of two days, starts the New Jersey portion of the AT. Weather on the first day was completely overcast, misty, and a bit foggy at the start of the day. On the second day, the weather was a little more cooperative – mostly cloudy, but no fog. On occasion, the sun would come out for a brief time.
There were a few AT hikers seen on the first day. On the second day, a couple of park rangers were encountered along the trail, and Bob Wolff, a member of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. He provided some very interesting information about the Catfish Fire Tower that was visited during day 2 of the AT hike. Little did we know at the time we spoke with him, he used to be a fire warden who manned the Catfish Fire Tower.
In the middle of this section of trail is the AMC Mohican Outdoor Center (MOC), which was visited on day 1. This is a good place for hikers to stop to camp, get a shower, and re-supply. The MOC even serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
There were several views along this section of trail, most of which were seen (best) on day 2. The elevations along this section of trail do not reach 1600 feet. This would be considered nothing more than a ridge walk for the majority of this length of section.
